I was always curious, but it seems every rp I've been involved in everyone rp's in third person. It's like an unspoken rule or something I'm basically curious if you guys have any specific reason for writing in third person in rp's. Mine is pretty simple, I need my third person writing to improve.

I write in the third person because it is pretty much an unspoken rule for RPing. Writing in the first person really can help you get into the head space of the character, but reading it all together, it makes it seem jumbled. Writing in the third person helps the whole piece come together better.

When I first started to RP, I just conformed to what everyone else was doing.
But when I think about, it's a pretty basic understanding. Think of it this way, have you ever read a novel that switched 1POV for every character every two paragraphs? That would be extremely daunting. I like to think of RPing as people coming together to write a novel in 3 omni POV. That leaves room for all character development and helps gel consistency.

Third person is what I'm most comfortable with. First person gets a bit too personal, as well as biased. XD

I can get into character so much easier and everything just flows so naturally for me with it. When it comes to third person I feel like a midget trying to guard Shaq.

Well, I'm thinking it depends on the writer. I can't keep writing in first person because I start to project more of myself into their thoughts instead of what the characters should feel or think. Third person just allows me to state some thoughts in order to explain how they act, but not all so it still seems like there's an outside narrator.

Carol's right. An RP is a conglomeration. Try and read it where someone is in first person. It looks really assy. Imagine if you're playing multiple characters, too!

Do you all think an rp would work if everyone posted in first person? I've never seen one before so I'm assuming the answer to that is no.

I said someone, but I meant everyone. A whole RP. I mean, it obviously looks bad when one person is doing it in a sea of third person.
I dunno, maybe I'm just standardized.

No no I get what you're saying. What I was wondering is I've never seen anyone ever do like a whole RP where everyone was posting in first person and not third person, and I was curious if you or anyone else think it could ever work?

Well, it might if there was only three of four people, and slowly people were added because then you know everyone's character by their name. But that would be boring.
I use third person because I tried writing in first person but when you switch cahracters it gets confusing and you end up leaving yourself a reminder. Plus, as Shadow said, you make the character 'you'. I make my characters somewhat similar sometimes to my own personality but also different in many ways.
