On December 24th, 2005, a virus known as Pluto's Kiss crashed the entirety of the Internet for 77 minutes. Every single computer in the world connected to the Internet simultaneously crashed. Money was lost, planes literally fell out of the sky, and the United States' automatic defense system nearly fired nuclear warheads. The culprit for this crime was a 10 year old boy living in Los Angeles, California.
After Pluto's Kiss, all Internet access save for government or business was severely restricted. The Internet as we know it died on that day. Two years later, 2007, after it is determined that ALTIMIT OS is nearly immune to all types of viruses and worms, the Internet is re-opened to the public. And to celebrate, CyberConnect Cooperation released the first MMORPG since Pluto's Kiss.
It's name is The World.
The year is now 2010. On it's first day, it sold nearly 5 million copies worldwide, and by now that number has nearly doubled. Rumors have been spreading that there's a virus on the Japanese server for the game, and that it might have even spread to the English servers. What's even scarier, is that news reports from Japan have been saying that people have been slipping into comas recently. The connecting factor?
At the time they slipped into unconsciousness, every single one of them was playing The World.
But those are just rumors, ALTIMIT OS is supposed to be completely immune to viruses, right? And even if they are true, that's on the Japanese servers. It can't spread over to the other servers.... Can it?
Alright, that's the basic story outline. For those that know the lore, this will coincide with the original .hack games, taking place on the English servers as opposed to the Japanese ones. If interest sparks, I'll get character sheets up and basic info for people who don't know much about the series up. Be sure to post to let me know you're interested.
